Ken and I went to the west village one weekend and decided to grab brunch at High Street on Hudson a new-ish restaurant that is originally from Philadelphia. They have a small bakery in the front of the restaurant that sells the breads the restaurant uses for their breakfast sandwiches. We didn’t make a reservation so put our names on the list and sat down by the bakery:
The wait wasn’t too bad because it was still early (the place was pretty packed by the time we left) and when we sat down, we came up with a game plan for our ordering (but ended up ordering too much because everything sounded good!)
Our table:
We had to order the three types of toast (which were all good), Ken ordered the meatpacker with the best old bay potatoes I’ve ever eaten, and I ordered the baked oatmeal with apple butter and granola.
My granola:
Ken’s potatoes were a side dish but I could’ve ordered another portion of it because it was so delicious – they must’ve been fried at least twice because they were so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were also seasoned really well:
We also ordered a citrus donut:
I thought the donut would have the citrus cream all through the donut, but it was barely filled! I’d skip this if I came again, but otherwise, everything was awesome. They have some really delicious options for dinner so I’d like to come back and try them soon.
When my mom was in town, she wanted to go to Katz’s Delicatessen for some pastrami. She had seen the restaurant on a tv show on PBS so we took the subway to the lower east side and waited in line for some pastrami and matzo ball soup.
The line system at Katz’s is really interesting – every single person that goes in gets a ticket and that’s the ticket you need to pay and leave the restaurant. If you lose it, you’ll end up paying $50 to get out of the restaurant! There are multiple lines in the restaurant – we separated once we got inside – Ken went to get a Philly cheesesteak (kind of random but it was really good!), I got in line for the pastrami, and my mom went to find a seat.
We shared everything, including the pastrami:
And the matzo ball soup and chicken soup:
The pastrami was half pastrami and half corned beef – so salty and so delicious. The matzo ball soup and chicken soup were *too* salty (and the broth was basically water and salt) – so in the future, I’d probably get matzo ball soup from 2nd Avenue Deli and pastrami from Katz’s!
Back in 2010, I worked at Gilt City with three really great engineers – Christine, Baxter and Benny. The four of us spent a lot of time together and now that we’ve all moved onto other projects, we don’t see each other as much. Christine moved to the other side of the US but luckily, she comes to visit New York a lot and we decided to get together during her last visit.
We went to dinner at Bo’s Restaurant, which is a combination of local and New Orleans style food. They also have these lights in their main dining room:
We started with their housemade bread, which was served with deliciously salted butter:
We shared all of the dishes so we could try a little of everything. Their most popular dish is the fried alligator (so we had to get that), we got some savory beignets, and fish tacos:
The fried alligator tasted very earthy (not in a good way, although I think the only good earthy is from corn/beets). Everything else was okay – I didn’t love any of the appetizers (except the bread!)
We also ordered scallops with rice noodles:
And their buttermilk fried chicken:
For dessert, we ordered the beignets that came with their espresso ice cream:
All of us at dinner:
Even though the food wasn’t that great, the company was – we caught up on all of our adventures since leaving Gilt City (Christine and I started on the same day in 2010, Baxter started two weeks before us, and Benny had been at Gilt before all of us! Can’t wait to see all of you guys again soon.
Ken and I love pizza and really love the pizza from Roberta’s. I’ve never been there but Roberta’s is always at Madison Square Eats, which is close to our apartment so we always make our way there when it starts (it just opened last week!). My favorite pie from Roberta’s is the bee sting – a pizza with soppressata and chili honey – spicy and sweet!
For my friend’s birthday, we went to Bushwick (only for you, Anna!) and went to a show (The Grand Paradise). Afterwards, we went to Roberta’s for pizza. Because our group was so large, we did a set menu. We started with salads:
Cheeses and meat plates:
And then pizza:
So much pizza:
Roasted vegetables:
All of us after dinner – what a fun night celebrating Anna!:
After a fun afternoon with our friends at our apartment for brunch, we walked around the neighborhood and then decided we wanted to go out for dinner – specifically, we wanted the black label burger from Minetta Tavern. Ken hadn’t been before (and the last time I went was more than three years ago) so we hopped in the cab and went to the restaurant in Greenwich village.
We didn’t make a reservation but luckily the restaurant has the full menu at the bar and the wait was only 20 minutes before we were seated. We ordered the cod brandade (salted cod mixed with potato served on toasted baguettes, basically the complete opposite of what someone on Paleo would eat):
And the black label burger:
The bartender asked the kitchen to cut the burger in half so we could split it easily (which was super nice on her part, but it ended up making the bun really soggy so definitely not recommended). The burger’s served with a big tower of fries:
The burger was still amazing, even with a slightly soggy bun, and while we were enjoying our burger we were building our ideal burger (with mentions from In-N-Out, Shake Shack, and JG Melon). We need to go back more often – I love the decor and food at Minetta Tavern!
