Perhaps that is because religions are inherently institutions of control. They control what we believe, the ways we behave, and, ultimately, who is valued. This structure of control then extends beyond the larger religious community and into the home where, tragically, women and children are placed at the bottom of those value systems, making them especially vulnerable to abuse..

Chobani Soho

After one of my Saturday AKTinMotion workouts, I walked to the Chobani Soho store to get a post-workout snack. The store was originally supposed to be a pop-up shop but has been so popular that I think they continue to extend their lease! The store has a few chairs and tables so you can actually sit there and eat your yogurt, but I was on my way home and just wanted to pick something up. The store:

They add interesting toppings to their yogurt (or you can order it plain) and have both sweet and savory creations:

I was in the mood for something sweet, so I ordered the plain Chobani yogurt with toasted almonds and coconut flakes with pineapple:

It usually comes with honey but I figured the pineapple was sweet enough. It was such a great treat and since it comes in glass containers, I kept mine and now I can make it for myself at home! I definitely want to return to try their savory flavors soon.

My New York Bridal Shower!

My best friend and maid-of-honor, Angie, planned a beautiful bridal shower for me – not only is she currently getting her MBA and working full-time, but she also lives in Chicago and had to coordinate everything with my other bridesmaids from there! Angie arrived on Friday night and we ate chicken meatballs, caught up, and prepared for the fun weekend. On Saturday, I took Angie and Kellye (another friend from Illinois) to my dance class, AKT in Motion where we had an amazing hour and a half sweat session with Anna Kaiser, the amazing woman who started the workout program that’s changed my body! After class, Angie and I parted ways so she could start preparing for the bridal shower.

The bridal shower was at Audrey’s apartment and since our colors are baby pink and navy blue, Angie planned a baby pink bridal shower with lots of cute breakfast foods:

Creme brulee doughnuts from The Doughnut Plant, pink champagne macarons, pink heart sugar cookies, pink vanilla cupcakes, fresh berries, and lots of miniature foods, like these cute pancakes:

We also had freshly prepared mimosas:

And played cute games – in this photo, my friends are trying to guess how old I am in these photos that my mom sent from my childhood (Laura won, but it was surprisingly difficult!) We also played a game “he said, she said”, where everyone had to guess who said the quote – me or Ken. Here we are going through the answers and explaining the background of some of the answers (like, most embarrassing moment!):

Then, onto presents! Everyone was so kind and brought me some really useful gifts – things that we went home and started using right away! Here I’m opening Christine’s gift, a tea pot, two mugs, and two beautifully aromatic teas:

Ken and I now have little tea dates where we’ll drink tea, listen to music, and nibble on fruit slices! Me with my friends:

And then Ken dropped by to hang out with us:

It was such a fun day and so great to spend a full weekend with all of my friends – I’m so grateful to have wonderful friends and Ken and I can’t wait until July!

Rebecca and Jeff’s Wedding!

On Saturday, I woke up early and went to the Sports Club next to the Ritz Carlton to do my AKT in Motion treadmill routine and my arms routine. There are only 90-some days until my own wedding – I can’t believe it’s approaching so quickly! Luckily, we have all of our vendors selected and we just have to enjoy our engagement now. We’re heading back to Chicago soon to do our tasting, have a family bridal shower, and do our flower walk through. So exciting!

Back to Rebecca’s wedding: after my morning workout and steam, I got ready and met up with Rebecca and the other bridesmaids. Rebecca was getting her hair curled and makeup done – here’s the finished product:

We took photographs both indoors and outdoors because it was such a gorgeous day outside – almost warm enough to walk outside without a jacket, sunny and only a slight breeze. We took photographs all afternoon with the bridesmaids while Jeff and the groomsmen hung out, then met up with Jeff so they could do their first look. After that, we introduced ourselves to the groomsmen/figured out who we were going down the aisle with, took some quick group photos and then did a quick run through before the actual ceremony! Ken captured this shot of me walking down the aisle with Jeff’s friend:

The ceremony was short and sweet and ended with Jeff and Rebecca bowing to their parents (a very sweet gesture to thank them for raising them). After the ceremony, we took more photographs with the wedding party, including this photo Ken took of the bridesmaids:

Ken and I got in a quick photo before I headed back to bridesmaids duties:

The wedding was so fun and Rebecca and Jeff looked like they were both glowing the entire night! Ken and I also had a great time – it was a fun wedding weekend to hang out with our friends and to see everyone so happy!

Running in Washington, DC

Over the weekend, Ken and I took a short trip to Washington, DC because I was standing up in my friend’s wedding! We arrived on Friday afternoon and since we wanted to make the most out of the short trip, we quickly unpacked and put on our running clothes so we could run around the city. We were staying at the Ritz-Carlton (where they had their wedding) so we started running towards the sites and figured we’d run to see the sites and then go to Georgetown because we had to pick up studs for Ken’s tuxedo. We started at the Lincoln Memorial:

Then we ran along the mall to the Washington Monument:

It’s currently under repair from an earthquake in 2011, but still fun to see. Then we ran to the White House:

It was a beautiful day outside – not too chilly and very sunny, but I like to run with a hat to keep my headphones in place. Our run reminded us of our two favorite shows – House of Cards and Homeland. There are so many interesting places to see in DC and we tried to run around as many places as we could, but ended after seeing this statue by the White House:

We went back to the hotel, dropped off some studs we purchased along the way, and headed back out to Georgetown, where we walked along M Street, stopped in Dean and Deluca for some coffee, and browsed the shops before heading in for the evening. A good first night in DC!
