My Life
Before we headed back to the city, Ken and I ordered some breakfast from Bird on the Roof, a local establishment behind the main street/town center in Montauk. The restaurant is very close to the beach so there are a lot of seagulls in the area…they also like different types of birds, which showed in the decor:
I ordered the pancakes with bananas and chocolate chips:
And Ken ordered the Mexican frittata:
Ken’s frittata came with jalapenos, chorizo, lots of cheese, and roasted red peppers, while mine had an interesting batter and unevenly placed bananas and chocolate chips in the center of the pancakes. We enjoyed the black coffee and the lively ambiance but thought the food was only okay. The servers were all super nice and the cash register looked like it was an antique (it might have been – when the cashier rang us up, he said it had been there for more than 30 years and wasn’t sure how long it had been at the restaurant). A good place for a quick bite, but it gets very busy during brunch time.
After a round of golf, Ken and I showered and got ready for dinner at Inlet Seafood. The restaurant is located in Montauk and looks like you’re entering someone’s home when you walk in – the restaurant is on the second floor and the first floor has tour guides, restrooms, and a patio where you can watch the sunset. We put our names in at the hostess stand since they don’t take reservations, but were lucky enough to snag a pair of seats at the bar, where they serve the full menu.
We started with clam chowder:
The clam chowder wasn’t cream based, instead, it was a light broth with large clams, vegetables, and herbs and spices. Next, we ordered the fluke sashimi, a special they had that night, with cilantro:
The service was very slow, which surprised us when we saw the appetizer – it was literally fluke cut up with one cilantro leaf per piece of fluke.
For our entree, we decided to share the fish and chips:
The Inlet roll:
Crunchy spicy tuna, avocado, and ponzu sauce. We were surprised with the quality of the food – so many people raved about the restaurant but we thought it was very mediocre. The fish and chips were very stale (I think it had been sitting in the kitchen for a while because the batter was very heavy and it was way too greasy). We heard that the sushi there is absolutely amazing and on par with what you get in New York – I thought the inlet roll was okay but pretty flavorless compared to what we get for takeout in the city.
We enjoyed sitting at the bar and people watching but don’t think this restaurant is on our list of go-tos the next time we visit Montauk.

Montauk,
My Life
After our lunch at St. Peter’s Catch, Ken and I drove over to the Montauk golf course, Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course. It’s a public course that is one of the most beautiful courses I’ve ever played on (and it’s ranked as one of the top 10 best municipal courses in the US!) Ken and I had a really fun time golfing with two interesting guys – one was on the US Ski Team and is now looking to join a golf tour and the other is an opthamologist with three sons that live in New York (close to us, too!)
The golf course is very well maintained and their golf carts even have touchscreens so you can see how far you are from the greens (one annoying thing: if you go past certain areas and you’re not supposed to on the cart, you won’t be able to go forwards, only backwards…which is why the greens are so nice!) There were a lot of deer there, especially close to 18:
They weren’t afraid of the golf balls at all! At one point, I saw six deer in a sand trap watching us play…it was a bit startling to look up and see so many deer within 50 feet of us! It’s a fun course that Ken and I hope to play again next season (or maybe even this year if we can get out to Montauk again!)

Montauk,
My Life,
seafood
Over Labor Day weekend, my trainer, Anna, was kind enough to let me and Ken stay at her place in Montauk. We took the opportunity to rest and recharge (and play a round of golf at Montauk Downs!) and also eat some really good seafood. One place I kept reading about was St. Peter’s Catch, a fish market and restaurant that serves and sells what they catch. It’s off the main road in Montauk (Route 27) and very close to Anna’s house:
Ken and I walked in and there was basically one person taking care of the restaurant and fish market (so service was SUPER slow…at one point, I was wondering if they were actually going out to catch the fish we ordered!) Ken ordered the special, the fish tacos with a side of chips:
And also a side of corn on the cob because the corn was freshly picked:
And I ordered the lobster special:
The lobster took almost 45 minutes to get to me after I placed the order, but it was worth the wait. Ken and I both agreed that it was the sweetest and most tender lobster we’d ever had and the color of the shell was a shade of red that we’d never seen before on a lobster. The lobster special also comes with mussels that tasted a little bit like salt water and the sea, potatoes, and corn on the cob. Ken’s fish tacos were also amazing – the fish was fried but so tender and very well seasoned. We were thinking about placing another order for fish tacos and another lobster, but decided that we didn’t have enough time, especially since it took so long to get our orders.
I’d definitely return the St. Peter’s Catch – we sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful day while we waited (and thought about going to the brewery next door while we waited but decided against it since we were going to play golf after lunch!)
After a Friday evening dinner at Pearl Oyster Bar, Ken and I walked along Bleecker Street to find dessert. We walked by Yogorino, an Italian-based frozen yogurt chain that has popped up all over New York. We went in because I purchased a groupon for small frozen yogurts (I can’t resist a good deal on frozen yogurt!) Their frozen yogurt tastes a little more airy than Pinkberry (Ken and I both ordered the plain flavor). They also have a lot of topping options:
They also have different types of dried fruit:
I went with a fruit option, ordering a kiwi and blueberry frozen yogurt:
We walked on Bleecker while eating the frozen yogurt and then realized we should’ve split one order instead of getting our own – their small is *much* larger than what we’re used to! We biked home (on Citibikes!) and didn’t feel so guilty for eating so much dessert.
