Last month, I ordered cronuts online and went to Soho early one morning to pick them up…the cronut craze is still going strong at Dominique Ansel Bakery and the line was kind of ridiculous when I got there on Friday:

Luckily, I didn’t have to wait in the long line because I ordered the cronuts online and just had to walk up to the door and get in a separate line to pick them up. The flavor of the month was ridiculously good (raspberry lychee for Valentine’s day) and they’re so nice that while you’re waiting, they bring out little madelines to nibble on. When I got in, I saw the full-on madness of the cronut assembly line behind the counter:

Since I ordered the cronuts online, I was able to get 6 instead of the typical 2 – more to share! I brought them to the office and shared with my teammates. Before the big reveal:

Delicious, worth the hassle of going to Soho in the morning, and definitely not diet friendly. If you can’t get there for their cronuts (or their chocolate chip cookie shots…or frozen s’more…or DKA), then try their caneles – my favorite in the city!

Taqueria Diana

Christine, Yuko and I wanted to get together for a catch up session and wanted to get delicious Mexican food. I suggested Taqueria Diana, a restaurant in the East Village that I always pass by but have never gone into. The restaurant is tiny and doesn’t have much seating, but their food is so good that it’s worth standing just to get their nachos.

We shared the chicken nachos and they are drenched with goodness:

Lots of chicken, sour cream, beans, jalapenos and pickled carrots, and so many super crispy chips that we were asking ourselves why we ordered tacos on top of the nachos because we were all full after eating half of our nacho order.

We ordered a taco a person (seriously, too much food if you’re also getting nachos and sharing) – tacos al pastor for me and Yuko, steak taco for Christine:

The tacos weren’t as good as the nachos (and not the best in town), but respectable. Definitely go for their nachos – they are amazing!

Recently, I joined Graze.com to get some new, healthier snack options to mix up my afternoon snack break at work. The website is very easy to use and shows all these different types of snacks they offer (you can pick which ones you like and they will continue to show you similar options, kind of like curating your own snack box). Here’s my first Graze.com delivery:

I’m not eating sugar for a while so I couldn’t have some of these options (and I’m kind of surprised that I ended up with the apples and caramel dip because I really dislike dried apples), but I really liked the sour cream and onion nuts and the natural nuts:

Lexington Brass

Ken and I had a little staycation a few weeks back while my mom was in town – we stayed at a hotel near his office in midtown and ended up exploring the area while we were staying at the hotel. We took my mom out for brunch at Lexington Brass before we went shopping (a very successful trip even though I didn’t end up buying anything). Lexington Brass is a nice change of pace compared to the other stuffy restaurants in the area. My mom was in the mood for omelets and ended up ordering a Western-style omelet with a salad and multi-grain toast:

Ken ordered an egg white omelet with a side of chicken sausage:

I ordered a kale salad, but it tasted so off that I had to return it (and didn’t have a chance to snap the pic before I sent it back to the kitchen). My mom’s omelet and Ken’s omelet were both really good with a good combination of proteins and veggies, but Ken’s chicken sausage was not that good and I had to send my dish back so I ended up not having anything substantial to eat for lunch.

There were a lot of people enjoying bloody mary’s and mimosas during brunch (and a large celebration for someone’s birthday nearby). Ken’s been there a few other times in the past and has always said that their food is good (but not great). I would agree – not a place I’d go back to for food, but the drinks are good and it’s a place I’d go back to for happy hour only.

T Kettle

The blog has been a little sparse on the updates recently. Most likely because Ken and I haven’t been eating out at new restaurants a lot – we have been cooking at home, ordering our usual salads for dinner, or just getting something on the go (on our own!) Ken has also been traveling and we just haven’t had time to dine out at new restaurants recently.

Since Ken was out of town on a boys trip (golf, of course), I went with my cousin and his girlfriend to a Taiwanese restaurant on St. Marks, TKettle:

Hsiao-Mei was in the mood for the chicken at TKettle, which is made with breast meat and lightly fried and seasoned. We ordered the sampler as an appetizer (you can choose three different types of fried goodies for $9.99):

We ordered the Taiwanese fried chicken, the fried tofu, and the fried fish cakes, which are fried and then served with long skewers (just like in Taiwan at the night markets!) They are pretty plain without lots of seasoning, but we seasoned with lots of cayenne pepper and white pepper.

For Andrew’s entree, he ordered the sesame noodles with won tons and veggies:

And Hsiao-Mei and I ordered a bento box – she ordered the Taiwanese fried chicken and I ordered the Taiwanese fried pork chop:

The bento boxes come with white rice that is topped with meat, some vegetables, and half of a tea egg. Everything is served semi-plain and then you season on your own.

The food is pretty decent and it was packed in there because everyone was getting their bubble tea fix. We didn’t get any bubble tea because it was too cold outside, but there are so many flavors there that it’s definitely a good spot if you’re in the mood for bubble tea or something quick to eat.
