To promote the new Simpsons movie coming out on July 27th, 7-11 teamed up with The Simpsons and turned twelve 7-11’s around the United States into Kwik-E-Marts:

For the entire month of July, the twelve Kwik-E-Mart’s around the US will be transformed:

The store was packed and they already ran out of Buzz Cola when I arrived (around 2PM). It’s right outside Times Square (on 42nd between 8th and 9th) and you’ll definitely run into Simpsons fans there!

Happy belated Independence day!

Hope everyone enjoyed their middle of the week Independence day celebration! New York had drizzly weather and I missed the fireworks, but I had an indoor picnic and enjoyed lots of corn, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, blueberries, and this wonderful sandwich I created:

What’s in it and how did I make this masterpiece, you ask?

First, the ingredients:

1. One loaf of organic ciabatta bread
2. One ripe avocado
3. Jalepeno pecan pesto
4. One ripe tomato
5. Two balls of fresh mozzarella
6. 1/4 lb. smoked turkey

First, prepare all of the ingredients that need to be cut (avocado, tomato, and mozzarella). I’d save cutting the bread for last (otherwise the filling may become a little dry/stale). Cut up all of the ingredients, remembering to slice the mozzarella, avocado, and tomato very thinly so you’re not opening your mouth as wide as you can to take a bite. After everything is cut and prepared, cut the ciabatta bread and put a thin layer of jalepeno pecan pesto as the first layer. The jalepeno adds a little kick to the sandwich since all of the other ingredients are mild. Then begin layering (I layered keeping colors in mind so there was some variety in presentation, but it’s not necessary – you can layer any way you want to!).

We were going to pack the sandwiches and picnic on Roosevelt Island, but since the weather was so dreary, we had an indoor picnic instead. The sandwich would be even tastier if I had a panini grill, but for now, eating the sandwich cold is just as good. It’s an easy to make sandwich that’s very transportable!

Yankees Game!

Chris scored great seats to the Yankees game so we headed to the Bronx to watch the Yankees take on the Minnesota Twins. Check out our seats:

So close! So close! SO CLOSE!

We were in the foul ball zone…kind of like being in the splash zone at Seaworld!

The game was fun – the Yankees were up the entire time and we enjoyed some stadium junk food – italian sausage, waffle fries, and chicken fingers (delivered to us, too!)

One of the funny things about the games, in my opinion, is when guys come out to sweep the field and they’re forced to pump their fists and dance to the YMCA. Does anyone else find this hilarious?

Another shot of where we sat:

Now we have to score great seats to a Mets game before their stadium is torn down!

6th Street and Avenue B Gardens

Since Saturday was such a beautiful day, we decided to walk to the Lower East Side from the East Village. On our way there, we stumbled upon this great little garden on 6th and Avenue B:

It’s a communal garden for the area’s residents and has a lot of cute little nooks where you can bring a coffee and read (if you’re not afraid of the bugs). A lot of people were working on their gardens (the weather was perfect to garden since there was a slight breeze and it wasn’t too sunny) and Chris and I admired the work the area’s residents accomplished, especially this monstrosity:

What is that and how did people climb up so high to keep adding pieces of wood and random kiddie toys? The area is really cute and I definitely want to explore the area more:

Australian Homemade Ice Cream

After finishing our lunch at Dumpling Man, we headed to Australian Homemade Ice Cream to check out their ice cream offerings:

The ice cream comes in these metal tins and is made fresh daily – check out the strawberry cheesecake with CHUNKS of cheesecake:

We sampled the belgian chocolate, which was really delicious but a little too heavy after all the food we ate, and then tried the strawberry cheesecake with bits of cheesecake and strawberry. We settled on the strawberry cheesecake…I mean, how could you not considering all the fresh strawberries that were in the ice cream?!

A shot of of our fresh strawberries, creamy vanilla ice cream, and chunky cheesecake dessert:

It was absolutely delicious! The ice cream was really rich and thick, a little goopy, and really tasty. It was a little soft and melted really quickly, but we devoured the ice cream during our afternoon walk. I will definitely be going back to Australian Ice Cream, but probably not in the summer time – I don’t want it to melt too fast!
